6 Tips for Choosing an Internet Provider

Internet provider

Posted on August 26, 2024 by Evan Stein

Choosing an Internet provider is a daunting task. It’s something you cannot live without in modern society (but, that’s an entirely different blog post)! However, choosing the right Internet Service Provider (ISP) has many factors, such as availability, quality, cost, and responsiveness, just to name a few. So, where do you start? Read on for 6 tips to help you feel confident in your choice.

1. Determine what you need

One size does not fit all when it comes to your Internet provider. You need to look at your household and usage needs to determine the best fit. When looking for a car, you don’t need a minivan if it’s just you and your pup in the same way that if you have a family of 6, you shouldn’t get a 2 door sports car.

Consider how many people or devices will be using the connection. And what will you use the connection for? Does your house do much more than search and stream, or is there some serious gaming or working from home happening?

2. Look at all your Internet provider options

Like with most financial decisions, you want to shop around. Check to see what providers are in your area. Look into each provider’s uptime guarantees and data on service consistency.

But, don’t just rely on their marketing. Ask friends and colleagues who they use and if they are happy. This is especially helpful if they have similar needs to the ones you determined above. When reading reviews or asking for recommendations, factor in the connection’s quality and customer service experiences. Having a responsive provider is just as important as a fast connection.

3. Compare plans and pricing

Of course, you want to ensure that the cost fits into your budget, but there are a few factors to consider that may help your bottom line in the long run. Compare speed vs cost. Of course, you want to have fast speeds but don’t pay a lot more for just a little faster connection.

Read the fine print on any special promotions and factor in the long-term costs. It is easy to get blinded by a low price, but paying twice as much when the promo period ends may not be worth it.

4. Understand your contract terms

Read the contract. Once again, read the contract. Make sure you know what you are signing. Look at the length of the contract. Is it beneficial for you to sign a long-term contract or to be month-to-month? Are there any early termination fees? Can you upgrade and downgrade your plans with ease as your needs change?

5. Watch out for hidden fees

All your budgeting and calculations will be worthless if you’re surprised by secret fees. These can come in the form of installation feeds and monthly equipment rental fees. There may also be additional costs based on your usage. Are there fees for service calls, caps on data, or fees when you go over?  If these exist, you want to know about them and make sure there is a transparent way to track them.

6. Who you gonna call?

Ghostbusters can’t save you this time. No one wants to deal with downtime and outages. And you know that Murphy’s law means that things will break in the middle of writing a final paper or in the 4th quarter of a Steeler game. That’s why 24/7 support and quick response times matter. Make sure you know that there is someone to call around the clock who will resolve issues quickly.

Choosing an ISP is an important decision. Take your time, ask questions, and really compare your options before making your choice. Better yet, call for a free consultation to ensure you choose the right provider.
