In January 2026, we expanded our local Pittsburgh footprint by offering Unlimited 5G broadband within a 30 mile radius of Pittsburgh. Immediately people started asking us if they can access their work VPN using our 5G Internet. This was a head-scratcher for us because we wouldn’t ever think of offering a carrier-grade product that wasn’t VPN capable.
In an effort to increase their efficiency, cellular ISPs can cheat and engineer their network using a technology called CG-NAT. This is one of the most common reasons 5G Internet with VPN can be hit-or-miss with some providers.
Basically what they’re doing is merging a whole bunch of their subscribers behind one public-facing IP address. Although this is very efficient for their purposes — they don’t need an entire IP address for each individual subscriber — it’s somewhat insecure and very much not VPN friendly.
We don’t do that. And frankly we would never think this was okay.
We’ve built our Internet service around the needs of our subscribers first. Every Green Light Wireless subscriber, regardless of whether they’re on our On-Net Broadband platform or our Unlimited 5G platform, is issued their own public IP address. Some IP addresses are dynamic and may change from time to time, but static IP addresses are available for all of our customers upon request.
