In the last edition of our Pittsburgh Proud series we showed you around the Northside. Well, this month we’re heading south. Nope, we aren’t going to Graceland (though now we have that Paul Simon song stuck in our heads). This month we are heading to Pittsburgh’s own Southside.
Come along with us as we journey along the Monongahela River and learn about what to eat, drink, and do in the Southside.
Where to eat
Piper’s Pub
Obviously, we love all teams black and gold, but if Wolverhampton or Dortmund are more the teams you think of with those colors, you should spend your Saturdays and Sundays at Piper’s. They serve up favorites like Scotch Eggs and Shepherd’s Pie, along with the traditional drinks and brews to accompany them.
Grand Concourse
There is something stately yet warm and comforting about dining at the Grand Concourse. Maybe because it feels like a connection to the city’s opulent past, but a meal here always feels like a special occasion.
Page Dairy Mart
Spending 30 min or standing beside a major road underneath an overpass doesn’t sound like a special tradition, but waiting for Page’s ice cream is a staple of Pittsburgh summers. From a simple vanilla cone to their gooey and delicious ice cream nachos, there is something great for every summer night. If pumpkin spice is your thing, they have some amazing fall-themed treats as well before they close on October 17 for the season.
Dive Bar
There are a lot of great places to grab a burger in this city, but Dive Bar is one of our favorites. Pretty much the opposite of its name, the food served up here is innovative and tasty. If you just want to visit a dark dive bar, well, the rest of Carson Street has you covered.
What to do
Duquesne and Monogahela Inclines
The inclines of Pittsburgh are symbols of our city, along with perogies and parking chairs. These unique modes of transportation have moved workers from Mt. Washington to their jobs since the Golden Triangle was a cloud of dirt and soot. Did you know that Mr. Rogers originally wanted the Neighborhood Trolley to be an incline car, but they weren’t sure folks from other cities would recognize an incline. As a nod to this original inspiration, they made the trolley the same distinctive red paint as the incline cars.
Pittsburgh Steps
A slower but more heart-friendly way to navigate the Southside slopes and elevation is the Pittsburgh steps. While these are all over the city (and all very cool), the terrain of the Southside provides many opportunities to traverse 68 of these pedestrian paths. If you’re looking for a challenge, try the Oakley Street steps, which clocks in at 333 steps adorned with a community volunteer-created mosaic.
City Theater Company
At Greenlight Wireless, we love the theater, and one of Pittsburgh’s many stellar independent theater companies, City Theater, resides in the Southside. In their beautifully renovated performance space in the former Bingham United Methodist Church, this company focuses on new pieces by contemporary playwrights, allowing audiences to see the next blockbuster first.
GAP Trail
If the steps of the Southside aren’t a big enough commitment, take some time to enjoy the GAP trail. The trail, which begins at the Point, crosses the Mon at the Hot Metal Bridge and follows Water Street as it winds east to Washington, D.C. Runners, bikers, and family hikers enjoy exploring some of this beautiful trail.

Southside Slopes
If you’ve always dreamed of having a picturesque home with a view to match, the Southside Slopes are for you. If you don’t like steep hills or winding curves, it may not be! This neighborhood comprises the homes that make their way up the hills from the river and Southside Flats neighborhoods.
The Park at Southside
If something newer (and on flatter ground) is more your scene, check out The Park. Steps from the river and the shops and restaurants of the Southside Works, this development provides scenic city living.
